Lithium chargers use a higher voltage to optimize the lithium battery chemistry to prolong the battery’s lifespan. With lead-battery chargers, you get a lower voltage that will fill only 80% of your LiFePO4 battery. Additionally, LiFePO4 chargers allow the battery to charge five times faster, making it possible to get a full charge in one hour.

Choosing the right charger

Don’t forget to check the voltage of your LiFePO4 battery before buying a charger! That way, you can get a charger of a similar voltage, such as 12V for a 12V battery. Plus, you can determine how fast you want your battery to charge. Remember: the higher the amp rating, the faster the charging rate.

To know the charge time, divide the battery’s Ah (amp-hour) rating by the charger’s amp (A) rating. For instance, a 3-amp charger should complete the charge for a 10Ah battery in 3.3 hours. For safety, make sure the amp rating does not exceed the battery’s amp-hour rating because this could damage the battery.
